Getting Around Chinese Cities

There is no single best transport mode for every Chinese city or traveler. Match the mode to the exact destination, time of day, luggage and support needs; keep the destination in Chinese; and confirm the local operator's current route, last service, pickup point and accepted payment before each trip.

Quick answer

Start with the simplest mode you can verify for this trip. Metro can be useful when the line, direction, transfer and exit are clear; bus when the route and stop are clear; a venue's signed taxi queue when you need staffed, door-to-door help; and ride-hailing when data, the account, payment and the exact pickup point all work. Save the destination in Chinese and keep an offline and payment fallback.

Who this guide is for

Use this guide if one or more of these situations describes your trip.

Ten terms to understand first

Metro
A city's urban rail network. Lines, ticketing, operating periods, transfers and accessibility arrangements are set locally and must be checked for the specific journey.
City bus
A locally operated road service identified by its route and direction. Boarding, alighting and payment procedures can differ by city and route.
Signed taxi queue
A taxi waiting area identified by the airport, station or venue through current signs or staff. It is different from an e-hailing pickup point.
Ride-hailing pickup point
The specific zone where an app-booked vehicle is allowed or instructed to meet passengers. It may be on another road, level or parking area from the taxi queue.
Chinese destination name and address
The destination's current Chinese name plus a sufficiently specific Chinese address, preferably confirmed by the accommodation, venue or host rather than translated word by word.
Landmark
A recognizable building, gate, mall, station or intersection near the destination that can help distinguish similar names or entrances.
Transfer
Changing from one line, route or mode to another. The walking path can include ticket barriers, long passages or a change of level.
Station exit
A numbered or lettered way from the paid station area toward a particular street or building. The right station with the wrong exit can still leave you far from the destination entrance.
Last service
The final scheduled departure or usable service window for a specific line, direction and date. It is not a fixed nationwide time and must be checked live.
Local number
A phone number currently able to receive the calls or messages a service requires in China. Having one does not guarantee that an app or operator accepts it, and some journeys do not require one.

Ten city transport scenarios for international visitors
SituationPractical starting optionConfirm or keep as fallback
Daytime trip with a clear metro line, direction and exitCheck the local metro route and use the station's current ticket or gate instructions.Confirm transfers, the correct exit, last service and an alternate street-level route.
Bus number, direction and destination stop are clearUse the bus only after confirming the stop, direction and local boarding/payment method.Save the destination stop in Chinese and keep a metro, walking or staffed fallback.
You want a staffed road-transport starting pointFollow current venue signs or ask staff for the signed taxi queue.Show the Chinese destination before departure and do not confuse the queue with an e-hailing zone.
You can book a ride and identify a precise pickup zoneUse ride-hailing only after the account, data connection, payment and pickup point are working.Match the vehicle and designated zone in the service; use venue staff or the taxi queue if coordination fails.
Mobile data is weak or unavailableUse saved Chinese destination details, offline screenshots and staffed signs or counters.Do not rely on a live map, QR ticket, driver call or app translation as the only path.
Your expected payment method failsPause before boarding or booking and ask which current payment methods the operator accepts.Keep another prepared payment path; do not assume an international card, mobile wallet or cash-handling process works everywhere.
The map result or translated address looks uncertainConfirm the Chinese place name, branch, district and landmark with the destination or venue.Do not depart based only on an English name or a pin with no matching Chinese address.
Pickup is inside a multi-level airport, station or mallCompare the exit, floor, parking zone and pickup code with current signs before requesting or meeting a vehicle.Ask venue staff when the app pin and physical signs disagree; the vertical level matters.
You arrive late at nightCheck the airport, station and local operator's current late-arrival options before landing or leaving the train. If scheduled transit is unavailable, stay in a staffed area while arranging a verified signed taxi queue or another confirmed transfer.
You have a child, older traveler, wheelchair or large luggageChoose the option with the fewest uncertain transfers after directly checking the required facility or vehicle capacity.Keep a fallback that does not depend on an unconfirmed elevator, child seat, accessible vehicle or luggage space.

In short: A verified pickup point, Chinese destination, current payment path and fallback matter more than a generic claim that one mode is always best.

Using the metro

Plan the complete station sequence

Confirm the origin station, line direction, any transfer, destination station and useful exit. Search with current Chinese station and place names when possible.

Check the local ticket and gate path

Look at the operator's current signs or staffed counter before choosing a ticket, pass, card or QR path. Do not assume a foreign card, mobile payment account or phone setup will work at every gate or machine.

Verify the last part before leaving the paid area

At the destination station, compare the exit number or letter, street name and landmark. If mobility support is needed, confirm the usable elevator route rather than assuming every exit is step-free.

Using city buses

Match route, direction and stop

A route number alone is not enough. Confirm which side of the road, the destination direction and the Chinese name of the stop where you need to get off.

Confirm payment before boarding

Use current operator or stop information to check accepted payment and whether any action is required when boarding or alighting. Do not assume change, an international card or one city's transport code applies elsewhere.

Keep the destination visible

Save the stop and nearby landmark in Chinese. Monitor the route without displaying private account or travel details, and ask staff or another responsible venue contact when the stop is uncertain.

Signed taxi queueYou want to follow venue signs or ask on-site staff for a taxi waiting area.A current, clearly identified queue and a driver who can confirm the destination.Show the Chinese destination; confirm the vehicle is using the signed queue and ask how the fare and payment will be handled.
Ride-hailing pickup pointYou can complete the booking and coordinate at an exact designated zone.Working data, account access, service acceptance, payment and any required call or message.Match the vehicle in the service and the exit, road, floor or parking zone; cancel the attempt and seek staffed help if they do not match.

In short: The two pickup areas can be separate, especially at airports and railway stations. Follow the current venue layout rather than a generic national pattern.

Maps, multi-level spaces and station exits

Search the exact place in Chinese

Match the Chinese name, address, district, branch and landmark. Similar English names or machine translations can point to a different property, gate or city district.

Treat a map pin as one clue

A pin may mark the building center, a closed gate or a road that vehicles cannot use. Compare it with the destination's own directions and current street or venue signs.

Read the vertical layer

Large hubs can separate street level, concourse, transfer hall, basement parking and mezzanine pickup areas. Confirm the floor or parking code before moving toward a vehicle.

Use the exit as part of the route

Save the station exit number or letter and a nearby landmark. If the expected sign, street or building does not appear, stop and recheck before walking farther.

Print a static Chinese destination card

Print this blank card and fill it privately from information confirmed by your accommodation, venue or host. The page does not accept, save or send what you write.

目的地卡 Destination card
目的地中文名称 / Destination name in Chinese
完整中文地址 / Full Chinese address
附近地标 / Nearby landmark
最近地铁站 / Nearest metro station
出口 / Exit
联系电话 / Contact phone
给司机或工作人员的备注 / Note for driver or staff

Only fill this card privately after printing. Do not type or paste personal information into a public or shared page. Keep the printed card secure, and do not add passport numbers, payment details or booking codes.

Network and payment are dependencies, not guarantees

Live routes, QR transit, ride-hailing, driver contact and translated addresses can depend on working data, account access, identity checks, notifications and a compatible payment path. An App download, foreign phone number, local number or bank card does not guarantee registration or acceptance. Prepare an offline Chinese destination, current venue signs and another payment or staffed transport path before relying on a digital option.

Prepare for a late-night arrival

Check the exact arrival place

Confirm the airport terminal or railway station and its current late-arrival transport page. Do not transfer a timetable or pickup instruction from another terminal, station or city.

Check the date-specific last service

Use the responsible local operator's current information for the exact line and direction. This guide does not publish a fixed last train, bus, wait or journey time.

Keep a staffed fallback

If scheduled public transport is no longer available, remain in a well-marked staffed area while locating the venue's signed taxi queue or another transfer already confirmed with the responsible provider or accommodation.

Children, older travelers, wheelchairs and large luggage

Swipe or scroll sideways to compare all columns.

Support needs to confirm for each local journey
Support needLower-friction starting pointConfirm directlyFallback to prepare
Traveling with childrenPrefer a route with fewer road crossings, uncertain transfers and long station walks.Ask the responsible operator or vehicle provider about current child ticket, seating and restraint arrangements.Do not assume a requested vehicle includes a child seat; prepare a different verified mode or arrangement.
Traveling with an older personReduce transfers and keep planned rest points where practical.Check walking distance, stairs, elevator availability and the correct entrance with the venue or operator.Keep a staffed road option or shorter route that does not rely on one unconfirmed elevator.
Wheelchair or mobility deviceUse only a route whose step-free path and vehicle suitability have been confirmed for this trip.Confirm elevators, platform gaps, assistance procedure, pickup access and mobility-device dimensions with the responsible service.Arrange another confirmed accessible path; never treat a map's accessibility icon as a service guarantee.
Large or multiple bagsChoose fewer transfers and avoid routes with uncertain stairs or long pickup walks.Check luggage rules, elevator route, trunk or vehicle capacity and the exact pickup level.Split the journey differently or use another verified vehicle; booking a category does not guarantee the bags will fit.

In short: Accessibility and capacity are service- and venue-specific. Confirm the exact journey instead of assuming every station or vehicle provides the same support.

City transport FAQ

How should a foreign visitor choose transport in a Chinese city?

There is no single default choice. Compare the exact route, current operating information, destination, transfers, luggage, support needs, connectivity and payment. Choose the simplest option you can verify and keep a fallback.

Can I use a foreign bank card directly on every metro or bus?

Do not assume so. National guidance describes several payment pathways, but operator, city, machine, card-network and account support can differ. Check the current signs or staffed counter and prepare another payment method.

Do I need a Chinese mobile number for ride-hailing?

Requirements depend on the service and current registration path. A foreign or Chinese number may be accepted in some paths, but neither is a guarantee. Check before the trip and keep a signed taxi queue or staffed fallback.

Are the taxi queue and ride-hailing pickup point the same place?

Often they are treated as separate paths at large venues, but the layout is venue-specific. Beijing station guidance provides city-specific examples of different areas and levels. Follow current signs and staff at your actual venue.

What time is the last metro or airport bus?

There is no fixed national answer, and this page intentionally publishes no timetable. Check the responsible city, airport, station or operator page for the exact line, direction and travel date.

What should I do after a late-night airport or train arrival?

Check late-arrival options before the trip. If scheduled public transport is unavailable, stay in a staffed, well-marked area while finding the venue's signed taxi queue or another transfer you already confirmed with the responsible provider or accommodation.

Can I assume metro stations and vehicles are wheelchair accessible?

No. Facilities, step-free routes, assistance procedures and vehicle suitability vary. Confirm the exact stations, exits, elevators, platform path and vehicle with the responsible operator or venue, then keep an accessible fallback.

Does the destination card save or send my address?

No. It is a static blank print card with no input, storage or submission. Fill the printed copy privately and avoid adding passport numbers, payment details, booking codes or private contact numbers where other people may see them.
