China flight delays and cancellations: what to check next

Check the flight status in the airline's official channel, save the notice, and confirm whether the cause is attributed to the carrier or to weather, air traffic control, security, an emergency or a passenger. Then identify whether the request is voluntary or involuntary and whether a connection is protected by one transport contract. Do not assume a hotel, meal or compensation is automatic.

Quick answer

Check the flight status in the airline's official channel, save the notice, and confirm whether the cause is attributed to the carrier or to weather, air traffic control, security, an emergency or a passenger. Then identify whether the request is voluntary or involuntary and whether a connection is protected by one transport contract. Do not assume a hotel, meal or compensation is automatic.

Who this guide is for

This applies to
A passenger handling a delay, cancellation, schedule change, missed protected connection or refund request for a flight in China.
This does not apply to
A promise that a particular claim, reimbursement, compensation or bank posting will succeed by a fixed date.
Three questions control the path
What caused the disruption, is the request voluntary or involuntary, and do the flights form one transport contract?

Choose the recovery path in 30 seconds

Use the current airline notice, not a social post or airport rumor.

The airline changed or canceled the flight

Ask for the official cause and the available involuntary change or refund options.

I want to change my own plan

This is normally a voluntary request governed by the ticket and carrier conditions.

A connection is at risk

Confirm whether all segments are in one transport contract before assuming the next flight is protected.

Before you contact support

Recover in this order

Confirm the official status

Use the operating carrier or airport notice and save the time and wording.

Ask for the stated cause

Carrier causes and weather, air traffic control, security, emergency or passenger causes can produce different responsibilities.

Check the transport contract

For a connection, confirm whether the segments are under one contract or were purchased separately.

Separate voluntary and involuntary requests

Do not accept a voluntary-change path until you understand whether the carrier initiated the disruption.

Compare rebooking and refund

Read the exact ticket and current carrier options before choosing one.

Ask about assistance at the current journey stage

Food and accommodation duties depend on the cause and whether the disruption occurs at origin, a domestic stopover or after diversion.

Request written proof

Ask the carrier for written delay or cancellation proof if you need it for another process.

Track two timelines

Carrier or agent refund handling and the financial institution's posting time are separate.

Use the complaint channel if needed

Keep the reference number, solution offered and dates; the current rule sets a response-result timeline, not a guaranteed outcome.

Do not mix these paths

Official and practical fallback

If the app or booking agent does not explain the cause or available involuntary options, contact the operating or contracting carrier through an official channel or staffed airport desk. Save the notice and ask for a written record. Escalate through the carrier's complaint process before relying on unofficial intermediaries.

Common mistakes

Fixed disruption inquiry

Copy this into the airline's official support channel.

Hello. Please confirm the official status and stated cause of my flight disruption, whether my request is treated as voluntary or involuntary, and which rebooking or refund options apply to my ticket. Please also confirm whether my connecting segments are in one transport contract, what assistance applies at my current location, and how I can obtain written delay or cancellation proof.

Fixed text only. Add booking details only in the airline's official channel. ChinaReady does not save, send or receive them.

Frequently asked questions

Does every flight delay in China include a free hotel or meal?

No. Cause and journey stage matter. Carrier-caused and specified non-carrier disruptions have different responsibilities, and assistance does not always mean the carrier pays.

Will a flight refund reach my bank account within seven working days?

The national rule covers the carrier or agent completing refund handling within seven working days after a valid application and excludes financial-institution processing time. It is not a bank-posting guarantee.

Can I request written proof of a delay or cancellation?

Yes. The flight-regularity rule requires the carrier to provide written delay or cancellation proof when requested. The proof does not by itself decide compensation.
